Did you know that about 9 out of 10 children who are born deaf are born to hearing parents? That means that their moms and dads probably do not know sign language. The sad fact is that a very high percentage of those moms and dads will NEVER learn sign language well enough to effectively communicate with their deaf child.
Especially, the dads will not learn much more than “stop,” “come,” “yes,” “no,” “drink,” “play” and “eat.” Certainly, the parents usually do not have the language to share Jesus with their deaf child.
But 1 out of 10 children who are born deaf are born to deaf parents. These children and their parents can all communicate freely and effectively with each other by way of sign language that the parents probably already knew. BOTH mom and dad can communicate with their child, and both parents DO have the language to share Jesus with their deaf child. But, the awful trouble is that most likely neither of the parents is a Christian!
Let’s see, now. With 9 out of 10 not being able to learn about Jesus from their parents because their parents can’t even communicate well with them; and with 1 more out of 10 not being able to learn about Jesus from their parents because their parents aren’t even Christians…that makes 10 out of 10 deaf children who have little or no opportunity to learn of Jesus. And this is in the United States of America! It is no wonder that approximately 98% of deaf people are not Christian.
What about the deaf children in Ethiopia? Or in Haiti? Or in any of the third-world countries where deaf people are commonly exiled, abused, persecuted, uneducated, and left by parents in the ghetto as unwanted and finally forgotten children? THOSE CHILDREN NEED JESUS. Yes, and they need food, and clean water, and shelter, and education and love. There are millions of deaf children like this—way too many for you to reach them all.
BUT YOU CAN REACH ONE. Sponsor a child through Deaf Child Hope.
