The Communication Challenge for Deaf Children

In many cases, fathers learn only basic signs such as “stop,” “come,” “yes,” “no,” “drink,” and “play.” Unfortunately, this limited vocabulary often prevents parents from sharing meaningful conversations—or the message of Jesus—with their deaf child.

Only 1 in 10 deaf children are born to deaf parents who already know sign language and can communicate freely. However, many of these parents are not Christians, which means these children may never learn about the love of Jesus either.

The result? A staggering 98% of deaf people worldwide are not Christians because they never had the chance to hear the Gospel in a language they understand.

The Urgent Need for Deaf Children in Third-World Countries

The situation is even more dire for deaf children in places like Ethiopia, Haiti, and other developing countries. Many deaf children are abandoned, exiled, or left uneducated and without love. They face abuse, poverty, and persecution simply because they are deaf. These children need Jesus—and they also need access to food, clean water, education, and shelter.

Let’s see, now.  With 9 out of 10 not being able to learn about Jesus from their parents because their parents can’t even communicate well with them; and with 1 more out of 10 not being able to learn about Jesus from their parents because their parents aren’t even Christians…that makes 10 out of 10 deaf children who have little or no opportunity to learn of Jesus.  And this is in the United States of America!  It is no wonder that approximately 98% of deaf people are not Christian.
